2007-2008 Season Recap (See Photos below)

bullet

January 4-5, 2008 Gun Hunt -- 587 hunters participated in the January 4-5, 2008 Gun Hunt on the Cahaba River Wildlife Management Area, 192 on Friday and 395 on Saturday.  Twenty-eight (28) deer were harvested, 16 on Friday and 12 on Saturday.  Of the deer taken, 17 were bucks {1 button head, 2 broken up (unknown points), 4 spikes, 3 four points, 1 five point, 3 six points, 1 eight point, and 2 nine points} and 11 were does.

bullet

December 21-22, 2007 Gun Hunt -- 422 hunters participated in this two (2) day hunt, and twelve (12) bucks and a doe were taken.  The bucks were as follows: 3 spikes, 1 three point, 3 four points, 1 six point, 3 eight points, and 1 twelve point

bullet

December 14-15, 2007 Gun Hunt -- 524 hunters participated in the December 14-15, 2007 Gun Hunt on the Cahaba River Wildlife Management Area (225 on Friday and 299 on Saturday).  Twenty-two (22) bucks were harvested; eleven (11) on each day.  The breakdown was as follows: 2 -10 points; 3 - 9 points; 3 - 7 point; 3 - 6 points; 4 - 5 points; 2 - 4 points; 3 - 3 points; and 2 spikes.

bullet

November 30-December 1, 2007 Primitive Weapons Hunt - Fifty-three (53) hunters participated on Friday and eighty-seven (87) on Saturday.  Three bucks and three does were harvested.  While these numbers might be a bit disappointing...any day in the woods beats a day at work, for you lucky Friday hunters; and I guess you Saturday hunters could of been doing yard work!  Better luck next time.

bullet

November 23-24, 2007 Gun Hunt -- 564 hunters participated in this 2 day, either sex, hunt on the Cahaba River Wildlife Management Area.  31 deer were harvested including 21 bucks and 10 does.  See the photographs below!

bullet

November 17, 2007 Gun Hunt -- 364 hunters participated in this one day hunt.  This may be the largest turnout ever for a hunt on the Cahaba River Wildlife Management Area.  A total of 28 deer were harvested; 16 doe and 12 bucks.  The bucks break down as follows: one button head; three spikes; one 3 point; two 6 points; four 8 pints; and one 10 point that weighed 215 lbs.  Two of the 8 points also weighed in at over 200 lbs.  Obviously, the 2007 - 2008 season is off to a GREAT start!

bullet

November 12-13, 2007 Primitive Weapons Hunt -- Cahaba River Wildlife Management Area Biologist, Chas Moore, reports that, "Overall it was a slow hunt. Warm temperatures and a bumper crop of acorns kept deer movement to a minimum. We had 114 hunters to participate and only 4 deer were taken on the two day hunt. A six point, spike, and two does were harvested. This weekends cool weather should make for a much better hunt on Saturday (Nov 17th Gun Hunt)."

bullet

November 10, 2007 Youth Hunt--Thirty-six (36) youth participated in the November 10, 2007 Youth Gun Hunt on the Cahaba River Wildlife Managements Area.  Three (3) doe and one (1) button head buck were harvested.  DON'T FORGET TO TAKE A KID HUNTING ! ! ! !

Cahaba River Wildlife Management Area Sportsman, Lamar Boothe, is a frequent contributor to this site.  He is an avid bow hunter who understands the value of post season scouting.  In a recent post, on the Cahaba River Wildlife Management Area Message Board, Mr. Boothe posted the results of his most recent scouting trip, where he found a nice deer skull with antlers attached.  I hope that you enjoy the photographs that Lamar was kind enough to submit as well as the text of his original post.

Well last weekend as I have for the last couple of years I put some shoe leather on the ground and did some post season scouting and found some excellent sign opposite of where I have been seeing Mr. Big. He really tore up some rather large diameter trees in a bottom. Anyway I found the skull of about a 11" wide young 8pt in that bottom. I decided to leave it there as the squirrels had did a number on it. Today, after a long nap, I felt like doing some more post scouting. Well I went to a spot near a power line and man at the skull I found there. I don't know if he died of old age or by a hunter as he was maybe only seventy yards from the power line. He was a main frame 8pt and his G3's on both sides are 11 1/2" and his G4's are 8" the base of his antlers are 5". I think he passed last season but miraculously the squirrels had only nibbled on him a little. He is now sitting on my mantle Laughing . It is the largest skull I have found yet. Anyone else found something like that on the CRWMA before?

Mr. Boothe found enough fresh sign be confident that this fine animal's offspring remain in the area!

Don Cicero was kind enough to send in some photographs of deer that he harvested on the Cahaba River Wildlife Management Area during the 2007-2008 Hunting Season.  His description follows:

"I took this 7 point and two 8 points on the Cahaba Wildlife Management Area this 2007 - 2008 season. The 7 was a 2.5 year old that weighed 147lb. The 8 point with the broken tines was 4.5 and weighed 170lb. the big 8 point was 8.5 year old that weighed 180lb. Both 8 points were killed in Jan and were rutted out with zero fat. The 7 point was taken in Dec and had some fat reserves on him and was in good health but was a pie ball buck. My son and I also took 4 does. All of these deer were taken with Bow & Arrow. This is not the first year I have hunted the WMA but it is the first year I have hunted it hard and I am well pleased with the hunting there."

And pleased you should be Don!  That's some fancy work with a BOW!  Congratulations to you and your son on a GREAT season and thanks for sharing your Trophies with us!
