Here you will find photographs of deer that visitors to this site have harvested at the Cahaba River Wildlife Management Area in years prior to the 2004-2005 season. If you have a pictures of a deer taken on this public hunting area, please forward them to me at gevans@vis-info.com so that others might enjoy your trophy.

2003-2004 Season

Tony Preston sent in this picture of a fine 8 point that he harvested while stalk hunting on the Cahaba River Wildlife Management Area near Boothton. The deer was taken on December 31, 2003 at 8:30AM. This rutting buck was chasing a doe when Tony made a 75 yard shot with his 30-06. The 3 1/2 year old buck weighed in at 170 lbs and had an inside spread of 16".

Sam Mitchell sent in these pictures of a good looking five point that his son took during a gun hunt on the Cahaba River Wildlife Management Area in January of 2004.

Mark Tatum was kind enough to send in this photo of a fine buck that he harvested on the Cahaba River Wildlife Management Area during a hunt in December of 2003. The deer was taken in the morning and has an unofficial Boone & Crocket score of 156. Mark intends to have it scored officially after the required drying/aging time period. These Tatum boys have got it figured out!

Todd Riddle harvested this nice 6 point buck during the January 10th hunt at the Cahaba River WMA at about 8:15 am. The rut was in full swing and this fellow was trailing a doe (the buck...not Todd ! ! !). The deer weighed in at 145 Lbs. Congratulations on the deer Todd, and thanks for letting me post this picture on the Cahaba River WMA site!

Mike Luther (see 12/08/2001 pics) was kind enough to send in these two pictures of a four point that he harvested on the Cahaba River Wildlife Management Area on Saturday December 12, 2003. The shot on this four point was taken at between 250 and 300 yards, and Mike states that while the deer weighed in at 100 Lbs, he coulda sworn it weighed 400Lbs after dragin' it back to his truck. Thanks for the pictures Mike!

2002-2003 Season

February 22, 2003

FINAL REPORT: I had a telephone conversation with officer Rick Roberts, WMA Biologist, this evening to discuss the 2002-2003 deer season at the Cahaba River Wildlife Management Area. Officer Roberts was pleased with the attendance of the hunts, noting that over 2200 gun hunt permits were issued this year. Part of the reason for the large increase in the number of permits was due to the addition of one more hunt to this years schedule.

A total of 49 deer were harvested during the gun and primitive weapons hunts this year. Of these, 41 were bucks and 8 were doe. The largest deer weighed in at 220 pounds live weight. This deer also sported the nicest headgear with 9 points; equal length left and right beams measuring 22 1/4" each; a 16 1/2" inside spread; and 5" circumference bases. Officer Roberts also commented on a very nice 8 point with a 17" inside spread, 4 1/4" bases, a 22 3/8" left beam and a 21 5/8" right beam. The oldest buck harvested was 8 1/2 years old and had a nice 10 point rack. No official information is available concerning the harvesting of deer with a bow on the management area.

Roberts did state that the number of large deer harvest this year was less than the past several years, however he does not believe that this is indicative of a problem with management practices at the WMA. It is his observation that the rut came in earlier this year than in previous years. In previous year's hunts, the peak of the rut (a time when Mr. Big gets a little less cautious) closely corresponded with the late December WMA hunt, and according to Mr. Roberts, the timing was simply off this year.

No changes in management practices are planned for the 2003-2004 season. Officer Roberts anticipates planting the same green fields next year, and each year he tries to add a couple of new green fields when a suitable location is found.

Allen Tatum harvested the outstanding 220 pound 9 point below, on the Cahaba River WMA, during the 2002-2003 season. The deer was taken with a muzzleloader! This deer was the largest deer by weight and was also determined to have the best rack with equal length left and right beams measuring 22 1/4" each; a 16 1/2" inside spread; and 5" circumference bases.

Mark Tatum scored on this nice buck during a December 2002 hunt on the Cahaba River Wildlife Management Area. The seven point was at 50 yards.

2001-2002 Season

The 10 point below was harvested by Brad Vick on December 8, 2001 at 7:00AM

The deer below was harvested by Mike Luther on December 8, 2001. Mike had the deer scored at the 2004 Deer Expo, and it scored 134 1/2 points.

Allen Tatum harvested the buck below, in December of 2000 with a 30-06. The deer was traveling with 5 other bucks when Allen made the 100 yard shot.
