Description/General InformationGeneral Information Video: Dial Up Connection (NOTE: The above streaming video requires the free player Real Player. Find the link that says Free Real One Player.) The Cahaba River Wildlife Management Area is located in Shelby and Bibb counties on land leased to and operated by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries in cooperation with Hancock Forest Management and USX Corporation and TC&I Corporation. It opened in 1996 and is comprised of 43,400 acres and interspersed with occasional pockets of private land. Much of the land within the Cahaba River WMA has been clear cut, however, there are numerous pockets of hardwoods...especially along the drainages and on the steeper slopes. A good portion of the land has been replanted in pines. You will also notice several pieces of property that have been reclaimed after strip mining activities. As the name suggests, the Cahaba River flows through this management area. This diversified river offers many opportunities for outdoor recreation. In addition to the river itself, the Cahaba River WMA has many streams and creeks and is dotted with other ponds/lakes that were left over from mining operations. The road system within the Cahaba River WMA has improved greatly over the last several years. While most of the roads are traversable by two wheel drive vehicles, cautions should be exercised during periods of rain. The need for a four wheel drive vehicle is amplified during long periods of rain. Please remember to take all of your trash back out with you. Do your part to keep "OUR" Wildlife Management Area as clean or cleaner than you found it!
