Hunter Education Class Schedules

Since 1991, first time purchasers of an Alabama Hunting License, born after August 1, 1977, have been required to complete a state authorized Hunter Education Course. 

Over 13,000 students, young hunters as well as experienced ones, take the course annually.  The course is taught by Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries personnel and volunteer instructors. It is open to hunters ten years of age or older and is designed to "make Alabama hunters more responsible and more knowledgeable about wildlife conservation."

The course is made up of a minimum of ten hours of instruction, followed by a written examination.  Upon successful completion of the course, a patch and card are issued.  The card is recognized by Alabama, as well as other states that require hunter education prior to the purchase of a hunting license.

I have taken the Hunter Education Class, offer by the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries, TWO times.  I took it first in the early 90s to fulfill a requirement by the Hunting Retriever Club that would allow me to become a judge for their Retriever Hunt Tests sanctioned by the United Kennel Club.  I took it again in the late 1990s with my son, who was 12 years old at the time.  I found the class to be very enjoyable and an extremely worthwhile experience.  I enjoyed it even more the second time when my son and I took it together, allowing us to attend the class and study together about "stuff" we both enjoy immensely.

Many states, especially the western big game states, require all out of state hunters (regardless of age) to have attended a state authorized Hunter Education Class before being issued a hunting license.  So, before you travel out west for that Elk hunt of a lifetime, you might might need to attend one of these courses.
