My 1st One
Todd Riddle is shown above with the deer that he harvested on the Cahaba River WMA during the Januray 10, 2004 hunt. Todd was kind enough to send in the following description of his hunt. On the morning of January 10th, I got in the woods on the Cahaba River Wildlife Management Area right at daylight. The wind was blowing really hard...it was downright cold. I started my morning hunt on the power lines, but the wind run me off of it. It was too cold to be in the wide open with the wind blowing like it was. That's when I decided to take cover elsewhere. I ended up in some pines I had found earlier in the year. These pines were pretty open and the deer were using the area to travel through often. I've hunted this spot several times before (both bow and gun hunts) and never seen anything ... UNTIL THAT MORNING ! ! ! When I got to those pines, I roamed around for about 15 minutes to see if I could see any fresh signs of the rut. I didn't ,so I walked over to where I was going to sit and as soon as I got there, 2 does ran out of some pines to the right of me, and following them was the buck! He ran in with his nose in the air, hair standing up on his neck, grunting like crazy. When I clicked the safety off, he and the does stopped. He stopped behind 3 pine trees that covered his body, and the only shot I had was in the neck. I pulled the trigger and he dropped where he stood ! ! ! He was a 6 point with 3 tines broken off, but still a nice buck for my 1st one!!!!!! |
