Change
in Hunting Fees Announced for Wildlife Management Areas
Since
the mid-1960s, Alabama has required deer and turkey hunters on the Wildlife
Management Areas to purchase a WMA license. The cost was initially set at $3,
and in the more than 35 years of the license, the cost was never increased. Due
to inflationary changes in the economy, the value produced by the WMA license
decreased considerably. For that reason, the Alabama Legislature recognized the
need to approve a requested license fee increase. Beginning with the 2000-2001
hunting season, the WMA license will cost $15. In addition, the WMA license will
now be required of all WMA hunters, both small and big game hunters, that are of
license age. According
to the Commissioner of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources,
Riley Boykin Smith, "This annual permit allows hunters access to more than
775,000 acres on the state's wildlife management areas statewide, and to eight
shooting ranges. That's a great recreational value." For many years, the Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries has provided locations for shooters to enjoy their sport. To help offset the cost of providing the ranges, shooters are now required to have either a state hunting license or a WMA license. The small license fee will allow range users to help provide for range operation costs.
